- <p> You know rap has cracked the mainstream when even the most
- radical fare hits the top of the pop charts. N.W.A's album
- EFIL4ZAGGIN is No. 1 this week on Billboard's pop-album chart
- after just two weeks in release. The album (actually NIGGAZ4LIFE
- spelled backward) is a compilation of what the group calls
- "gangster rap"--inspired largely by the group's anger with
- society. The stuff gets crude, but its quick success shows that
- the rappers have enraptured a huge following. "People are hungry
- for N.W.A. Nobody can do it as good as we can," says N.W.A
- member Dr. Dre. "We're underground reporters. We're just tellin'
- the news."
